As many of you know, I stumbled upon Oman almost by accident.
Having secured a position with the Minister for Foreign Affairs in Damascus through a meeting with Bashar Al-Assad’s wife (What’s that? Stop name-dropping?) and with support through an Australian Government Endeavour Award, I suddenly found myself closely monitoring the Smartraveller warnings as the situation in Syria deteriorated rapidly. The DO NOT TRAVEL advice hasn’t changed since and we all know the tragedy that has unfolded in that beautiful country.
The rest is a story for another time, but a few chance encounters with Omanis in Melbourne and Sydney left me completely seduced by these elegant, hospitable, charming people.
I arrived in Muscat in 2012 knowing no-one and nothing. 6 months later I didn’t want to leave and I go back whenever I can. I want you to feel the same way. Obviously in 12 days we will only we can only skim the surface of this fascinating country…but it’s a start! I’ve devised an itinerary that offers a taste of all that Oman has to offer. The landscapes are extraordinary, the people are fabulously welcoming, and the history and culture are fascinating. If you are at all curious about the Arab world and/or Islam, this is the trip for you. If you have any concerns about safety (after all, Oman has some dodgy neighbours) this is quite a useful article.
There will be a maximum of 8 people per group, plus myself and a local Omani guide.
Accommodation will be a combination of hotels, homestays and with the odd bit of glamour thrown in from time to time. Oman’s tourism strategy is aimed firmly at high-end tourism and there are some stunning hotels in the country. They also come with a stunning pricetag! I’ve found places that best represent what’s unique about Oman, without breaking the bank.
Of course you will have questions about appropriate dress, alcohol etc. More about that later…or email me at [email protected].
